Celebrate the Dogs in Your Life
August 26th is National Dog Day. Colleen Paige, pet and family lifestyle expert and animal behaviorist, founded this holiday in 2004. This day is dedicated to honor dogs for all they do to make our lives better. It raises awareness about dog adoption and why it is important to rescue dogs and give them a forever home in a safe and loving environment. Its purpose is to rescue dogs from homelessness and abuse. This holiday is referred to interchangeably as World Dog Day, National Dog Appreciation Day, National Dog Day, or International Dog Day.
Dogs are often known as man’s best friend. They were the first animals to be domesticated by humans. Various jobs such as guarding property, herding stock, pulling loads, hunting game, protection, assisting police and military, and companionship have been handled by dogs throughout the years. Organizations such as Paws with a Cause, Hero Dogs, Service Dogs for America, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, and so many more are able to connect dogs that have been trained as “service” dogs to help people with special emotional or physical needs.
Today, most dogs are pets and considered part of the family – so today give them some extra special treats. You can also celebrate this holiday by adopting a dog into your own loving home or donating your time and/or money to the local animal shelter.
Fun Fact…..
Dalmatians are not born with their spots. They do not appear until they get older.
