It is believed that Thomas Jefferson discovered the vanilla flavor when he was in France and then introduced it to the U.S. The Library of Congress has a handwritten copy of a vanilla ice cream recipe in the 1780’s given by Jefferson. The Thomas Jefferson ice cream is available at Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota.
