Macaroon Day originated in an Italian monastery. Here is where the macaroon recipe was born and eventually brought to France and presented to the wife of King Henry the II, Catherine de Medici. You can find Macaroons in a variety of flavor combinations, and there are specialty Macaroons all over the world.
The original Macaroon recipe called for egg whites, sugar, and almond paste. In many parts of the world, coconut is substituted for almond paste. Jam, chocolate, or fruits in syrup often top the Macaroon.
