We do not know the origins of this unofficial holiday, but its reason is clear — celebrate the delicious pizza that only includes tomato sauce, seasonings, and cheese.
This Italian dish is made of rolled dough topped with tomato, cheese, vegetables, or meats and baked in an oven before it is served. The pizza that we know today is believed to have started in Naples, Italy. The Neapolitan pizza is made with tomatoes and Mozzarella cheese and ia a Traditional Specialty Guaranteed product in Europe. So in the European Union and the rest of Europe, only pizzas made in Naples may be called Neapolitan pizza.
Raffaele Esposito created a variation of Neapolitan pizza in 1889 to honor the Queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy. This Margherita pizza represented the national colors of the flag of Italy with the use of tomato, mozzarella and basil.
