Here are some ideas to update your floors without spending a fortune. Your home will look brighter and fresher!
Using floor stencils is one way to have your floors make a statement without a steep price tag. These are ideal for a kitchen or powder room. A design such as a mosaic or geometric pattern will create an entirely new look and will work on tiles, parquet, wood, linoleum, and even a concrete patio. You can go to Royal Designs for some great ideas.
Think of painting your existing neutral ceramic tiles. You can choose bold colors to bring the whole room together. You will need to choose an acrylic latex or epoxy floor paint so the paint will adhere to the tile surface. If you have existing unglazed tile, apply a sealer to fill in any small pores on the surface of the tile. A high-shine tint will last longer and also reflect the light so the room looks brighter.
If you have parquet floors, these can also be painted to brighten your home and fit in with current decorating trends. It is suggested you sand the floors to smooth out any imperfections (Always sand in the direction of the wood grain and do not grind the electric sander in any one spot for too long). Then you will need to paint the parquet floors with an oil-based primer, then paint with a wood stain or a gray or black. Lastly, use a polyurethane coat to finish off. You now have all new flooring.
